116 Run Mayapple Trail Races in 2014
One hundred sixteen hardy runners took part in the SMR Mayapple Trail Runs on Saturday, May 30, 2014: 5 for the 100k (62 miles), 25 for the 50k (31 miles), 37 for the 20 mile, and 49 for the 10 mile distance. This year’s eastern loop incorporated parts of two newly completed trails, the Reservoir Connector (from Tulip Springs to the Orange Reservoir with dark orange and yellow-green blazes) and the Zoo Loop (green dot blazes) and crossed over the Orange Reservoir Dam. Race directors Dennis Percher and Alex Winnicker thank the 17 volunteers who helped flag the course and staff the aid stations. Only one runner, Ryan Thorpe, finished the 100k in a time of 13 hrs. 44 minutes. This is the sixth year the race has been run by the SMC, and the first time it has been sanctioned as part of the USA Track & Field Association’s Ultra Trail Run Series. In 2014, 67 runners took part. For details, go to https://sites.google.com/site/southmtn100k/, The race helped raise $4,000 for Conservancy projects.
