The South Mountain Conservancy is working hard to make your experience more enjoyable, and to make the Reservation into everything that was first envisioned for it more than 100 years ago. We are a non-profit, volunteer organization. The Conservancy is the only group dedicated to constantly assessing the Reservation’s needs and working with the County — and on our own — to plan and execute improvement projects. These projects range from working with Eagle Scouts and the Student Conservation Association to helping oversee million-dollar Green Acres programs like the trail reconstruction and building scheduled for this spring. And through the twenty-year forest regeneration program, we are working to transform the park into a healthy, ecologically-balanced forest that is user-friendly for a broad range of activities. With the reduced County Parks budget and maintenance crew, our efforts are needed more than ever.

We hope that whatever your interests — whether relaxing in one of the nine picnic areas, strolling on Crest Drive or to Hemlock Falls, staking out a quite venue to bird watch, hiking through the fall foliage, or snowshoeing blanketed hills – that our actions help maintain and enhance the exceptional resource that is the South Mountain Reservation in our backyard.

Your involvement in our activities and financial support are vital to the continuation of our programs. Our expenses range from our Web site, to the tools, materials, water and granola bars for dozens of volunteers over nine months, to large projects, such as $3,000 (matched by Green Acres) to remove graffiti and restore the stonework and roof of the last remaining shelter, The Crag.

If these efforts are ones you want to support, come join the Conservancy. At our basic membership level of $25 we will send our laminated map reflecting recent trail changes. (Of course, if you can, please don’t hesitate to donate more.) And now, you can donate above through PayPal. Or you can mail a check to SMC, P.O. Box 273, South Orange, N.J. As a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, your donation is tax deductible. Either way, it helps us preserve this great park.

Note: You can include us in your corporate matching program, or designate the Conservancy as a beneficiary in your estate plan. Besides monetary support, please join our hikes and volunteer activities April to December. Sign up for our E-Bulletin on this site, or see our events calendar for details.

What We Do

The South Mountain Conservancy helps to preserve, protect, and enhance the 2,110-acre South Mountain Reservation in Essex County, New Jersey through education, public service, and advice to local government agencies. The Conservancy partners with the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs and other environmental groups to improve the Reservation’s infrastructure and ecology, and enhance its natural beauty and the experience of current and future users.
