"Get the water off, get the water off, get the water off!! "
That’s the mantra for building "sustainable trails" – trails which can withstand multiple types of trail users and require minimal maintenance. A sustainable trail balances many elements. It has very little impact on the environment, resists erosion through proper design, construction and maintenance, and blends with the surrounding area.
There is a science to designing sustainable trails, and specific rules which are applied in trail construction. However, the most important element is to control the flow of water on, across and down a trail.
In July 2007, the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s Trail Care Crew trained over 50 local volunteers in sustainable trail design, maintenance and construction – culminating in almost ¾ mile of new single-track built in the Reservation.
