The Chainsaw Gang is a group of trained volunteers that work to remove toppled trees that cause blockages along the 50 miles of hiking trails in the Reservation. This group is critical to keep the hiking trails safe and accessible for trail users.

The Chainsaw Gang consists of people experienced with chainsaws and others assisting as “draggers,” who clear the surrounding brush and haul away logs. Problem trees are identified by hike leaders, our Trailkeepers, and others who contact the Conservancy.  Trees that require special equipment are reported to and addressed by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs.

The Chainsaw Gang takes pride in being quick to respond and clear problem trees after large storms such as Hurricane Sandy, the spring storms in 2018, and tropical storm Isaias. Each year the  Chainsaw Gang dedicates thousands of volunteer hours and removes numerous trees from the trails. In 2020 alone, these volunteers removed over 300 fallen trees from our trails.
